In much of the developing world, informal settlements are often synonymous with slums, and therefore refers to settings that indicate a lacking security of tenure, formal basic services, supportive city infrastructure, and compliance with current planning and building regulations.

These are problems that can be assessed on the criteria of affordability, location, and cultural adequacy.

It is through these lenses that global institutions and international donors have continually expressed hope at the turn of the millenium that by the year 2030, it be a guarantee of governments across the world and leading players to ensure guaranteed access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and the subsequent upgrade of informal settlement areas.

It is on this background that Kenyan-bred institution, Omoh Homes has a number of programmes that seek to promote access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services.

The Omoh Green Housing Project that is set to be rolled out in the coming months, has taken proactive steps seeking to ensure there is the creation of a thriving ecosystem around the project. Apart from  just building houses for buyers, such projects  also take a keen look at the ecosystem around it. As an additive measure to boosting the prospects of the project, so is the number of direct and indirect jobs that  will be created  in the hundreds, if not thousands and also in turn provide these families with a place to get a much needed stable income as based on the project.

Over the last two decades, there has been concerted effort and push in combating the anticipated adverse effects of climate change and promoting sustainable living. These moves have seen the pioneering of initiatives from governments to private stakeholders and individuals joining efforts that aim at combating and the control of GreenHouse Gases emissions.

With rapid urbanization, the continent is experiencing a significant influx of people into cities hence adequate housing is essential to accommodate this growing population and prevent the proliferation of informal settlements.

All will not be lost to note that quality housing does contribute to social stability by improving living conditions, reducing overcrowding, and fostering community cohesion. It can also enhance access to essential services like education and healthcare as well as economic inclusion as affordable housing initiatives can provide low-income families with access to better living conditions, reducing inequality and promoting social inclusion.

Recent technological advancements and innovations have in a large extent been re-shaping the energy sector, with significant investments being placed in carbon credits and housing projects. The spearheading of the green-kitchen project namely The Omoh Green (T.O.G) which is a climate conscious project initiative dubbed The Arcana Gardens Estate Phase 1, located in Malaa, Machakos County aims at developing 2 and 3 bedroom units fitted with green-kitchens that have pre-installed low carbon stoves.

By promoting the use of clean energy alternatives, these initiatives not only benefit the environment but also empower residents to adopt greener lifestyles.

As governments and organizations across the world intensify efforts to combat climate change, initiatives like The Omoh Green Housing Project will be at the forefront demonstrating that sustainable development is not only achievable but also essential for building resilient, thriving communities in the face of environmental challenges.

In partnering with low-carbon stoves and charcoal briquette makers and distributors across the region, this will be a concerted effort in combating and controlling greenhouse gasses emissions (GHG) and in turn spread the message on climate change across Africa and globally.

It is estimated that the Omoh Green Housing Initiative Project will be rolled out in 17 counties across the country at almost 120 designated sites with a sharp focus being highlighted on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on reduction of poverty levels and job creation being placed around the project.

According to the project blueprint, this is in an effort to combat global warming and address the climate change agenda across Africa and globally which in turn has a tremendous positive environmental impact in the long term.
